Are Execs serialized within a script?

I have a script in which I use an EXEC (to create a spreadsheet from a table) and then, in the same script, I wish to include the spreadsheet in an attachment to an email created w/ SENDMAIL.

Can I be assured that the EXEC will complete before the script continues onto the section where the email is sent. If not, is there something simple I can do to assure the SENDMAIL does not run until the EXEC completes?
