Does Commit SQL commands have any value?

I have a rather large batch odb script update process that is scheduled nightly on my PC (not the server) which goes against a pretty active table on my database. Obout once a week the job takes a couple hours to run when it normally runs in about 5-10 minutes. I'm thinking that the cause may be some table locks that may be occurring. Could putting a sql commit in my ODB script code free up some locks I have.. or is the commit internally taken care of for me?
