OUTPUT a $variable$ without it being processed

I have a script that opens one html file, allows a user to edit the title, then allows them to output the modified file and overwrite the original.

THE PROBLEM : all variables in the target page are processed as they pass though this script and therefore '$year$' is written back as '2008' and so on.

I've tried $repl, and using the asc code of 36 for the dollar sign , but no luck yet.

any help?
